Discover the strange but beautiful world below the surface of the park. This program includes some scrambling over rocks and possibly wading through underground streams. Come to the Carter State Natural Area parking lot for this strenuous five-mile round trip hike. Bring two sources of light, long pants, boots, water, and a snack. Ranger Brent will be your guide for this cave trip.
Cave trips are also planned for April 18 and April 19.

Easter Egg Hunt
Our 28th Annual Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled at the Visitor Center Complex. This event is for children walking age and up. There will be five (5) age categories, with four (4) prizes awarded to each group for children finding the prize eggs. There will not be a “most eggs found” competition. Adults will only be allowed to assist toddler hunters in the walking to age two (2) group.
In case of rain, the Easter Egg Hunt will be rescheduled to Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 1:00 p.m.
(The Friends of South Cumberland State Recreation Area will sponsor this event.)

Wildflower Hike
Come out and see South Cumberland’s rich bounty of spring wildflowers on this moderate 4 mile hike to Horse Pound Falls and back. Meet Ranger Jason at the Collins West parking lot with water and a sack lunch.
Sunday, April 26, 2009 (This one was not in the published schedule!)
10:00 am
Collins Gulf Wildflower Hike with Mary Priestley
Friends Board Member and wildflower expert, Mary Priestley, will be leading a wildflower hike into Collins Gulf. The hike will depart from the Collins West parking lot at 10:00 am. Bring your camera!
Mary says this morning: I don't have anything to report about wildflowers in the park. Shakerag Hollow is the only place I've been -- there's lots blooming there: bloodroot, hepatica, spring beauty, Dutchman's britches, toothwort, rue anemone, trout lilies, and several violets.
Friends Sponsoring Student Field Trips
Friends of South Cumberland State Recreation Area are happy to be able to sponsor a full-day field trip this spring to Savage Gulf for every fifth grade class in Grundy County. Field trips will be led by park rangers. Read all about it and see a photo from one of last year's trips in the Friends blog http://www.friendsofscsra.org/blog.html
Happy Spring!
